What Is a Computer Bug? Explained for Kids
A game freezes. An app closes by itself. A character walks through a wall. When software does something it should not, the cause is usually a bug.
A bug is a mistake in a program
A program is a long, exact list of steps that tells a computer what to do. People called programmers write those steps. People make mistakes, and a mistake in a program is called a bug.

Computers follow steps exactly
A computer does what the steps say, even when the steps are wrong.
Imagine these instructions for getting ready for school:
- Put on your socks
- Tie your shoelaces
- Put on your shoes
A person would notice the problem and fix it without thinking. A computer would not. It would try to tie the laces first.
Finding and fixing bugs
Finding and fixing bugs is called debugging. Programmers test a program, look for the step that is wrong, fix it, and test again.
Every programmer makes bugs. Debugging is a normal part of the job.
Why apps ask to update
Updates often fix bugs. That is one reason apps and games ask you to update them.
In 1947, engineers working on an early computer found a real moth stuck inside it and taped it into their logbook. The word “bug” was already used for technical problems before that.
